Be Weird!

So what is “Normal”?  Well, according to Merriam-Webster’s dictionary it means:  “Conforming to a type, standard, or regular pattern”.  Take a look around you next time you are in a crowded mall, or restaurant.  What is the “regular pattern”?  I see people going with the flow doing “normal” things and getting “normal” results.  Well, guess what?  Normal isn’t working!  Normal people are in debt.  Normal people have strained relationships, or are divorced, or have unmotivated kids.  Normal people in this country are overweight, unhealthy and frankly, many of them are lazy.  If that is what is “normal” these days, then I don’t want to be normal.  I want to be weird!

When I decided to commit 100% to my transformation I had to make significant changes to my diet and exercise.   Normal people didn’t understand these changes.  For example, when I went out to lunch with friends I’d order a salad with no cheese, no croutons, and no dressing…weird huh!  Baskets of hot delicious white bread would be placed in front of us and I wouldn’t touch it.  It was a bit of an adjustment for me, but I was focused like a laser on my goals.  I knew what it would take to achieve them and knew I had to be weird.  After all, normal people  aren’t ripped with 7% body fat!

If you are committed to P90X, Insanity, The ASYLUM, Turbo Fire, Chalean Extreme, etc. you must have the courage to step out the “normal” and move into the realm of the “weird”.  People will probably label you as extreme, obsessed, fitness fanatic, no fun.  You will hear things like “would you like some tree bark for lunch?”, or some other lame attempt at humor.  But you know what?  I embrace that!  Because that means I am not doing what normal people are doing.  I’m not going to end up on blood pressure meds, or cholesterol meds, or have obesity related diseases.  I’m going to be the weirdo that has the strength, flexibility, and energy to play ball with my child and grandchildren, and maybe even my great grandchildren.  That’s not normal…that is weird!  And I’m teaching my son to be weird too!

Do you have the courage to be weird?  You won’t regret it if you do!  The rewards of a “weird” life are wonderful!

  1. Great message Brian. Hey just so you know. I am weird too! I have been labeled extreme, obsessed, blah blah blah. You’d think after 19 months people would realize this is the new me and it is here to stay. But everyone want to see you get knocked off the wagon and go back to norm. It would make them feel better. Well, they will get no such pleasure from me!

Be weird and know that you are not alone!

  2. I’m weird, too. People just don’t get it! They’d rather die taking the easy way than truly live by improving their lives! Thanks for leading the “weird way”! You’re changing lives and inspiring a lot of people!

  3. Great post Brian!! Sadly America’s normal standard for health and nutrition has hurt our country more than most of us can realize. Tunnel vision sets in on trivial things that take away from exercise. bad eating habits are normal now too becaue of convenience. If stepping out of the box and weird is what it’ll take to live a long and healthy life filled with prosperity, I’ll be weird everyday ;)
