<td>A few weeks ago, we gave you tips &#8220;on building great-looking abs. Now we&#8217;re going to focus on the other half of the equation: your diet. When it comes to creating incredible abs, even the most effective workout programs can only bring you so far. That&#8217;s because you can&#8217;t get a flat, hard midsection without losing body fat. Here&#8217;s how to eat your way to great abs.No matter how much effort you put into creating a six-pack, no one&#8217;s going to see it if it&#8217;s covered by a layer of flab. (The good news? While it&#8217;s impossible to &#8220;spot-reduce,&#8221; abdominal fat is often the first to go when you start losing weight.) If you&#8217;re following the dietary guidelines of a Beachbody<sup>®</sup> fitness program or a personalized meal plan from TeamBeachbody.com, you&#8217;ll automatically be eating the right foods to lose fat as you get in shape. But the following seven principles can give you an extra edge, and will help ensure that the effort you&#8217;re putting into your abs will bring you the results you want.</p>
<p><strong>Get plenty of protein</strong><br />
Eating enough lean protein promotes fat loss and muscle gain, the two most important elements for developing great abs. It also helps keep you from getting hungry while you&#8217;re eating right. You don&#8217;t have to gobble down 12-ounce steaks—just eat a normal portion of lean meat, fish, low-fat dairy, or vegetarian protein with every meal, and make sure your snacks contain some protein, too. If you still have a hard time getting enough in your diet, a daily shake made with Whey Protein Powder or Shakeology<sup>®</sup> can be a perfect addition.</p>
<p>By the way, protein is especially important in the morning, when a lot of people don&#8217;t get as much as they should. A protein-rich breakfast will help keep your blood sugar steady for hours, preventing the dips that can lead to cravings later in the day. (Try some low-fat chicken sausage, or an omelet with one whole egg and three egg whites, along with fruit or whole-grain toast.)</p>
<p><strong>Reconsider your carbs</strong><br />
Despite the popularity of low-carbohydrate diets, the average American meal is still too high in sugar and fast-burning starches to bring body fat down to ab-baring levels. It&#8217;s time to say goodbye to sweetened soda, ditch the Doritos®, and save the cake for your birthday. If your fitness plan calls for a sports drink before a long cardio workout, or a carb-and-protein recovery drink after resistance training, that&#8217;s fine. But the rest of the time, stick with foods that are on the low end of the glycemic index (refer to GlycemicIndex.com for more information)—these foods burn more slowly, so they won&#8217;t spike your blood sugar and insulin levels.</p>
<p><strong>Have fun with fiber</strong><br />
Something about the word &#8220;fiber&#8221; just doesn&#8217;t sound appetizing. But high-fiber foods can actually be quite delicious: fresh berries and other fruits, salads loaded with colorful produce, your favorite steamed vegetables or vegetable soup, stews or chili made with beans, chewy whole-grain breads and cereals . . . You get the picture. (These foods just happen to be loaded with nutrients as well.) High-fiber foods keep you fuller with fewer calories, and they help keep your digestive system working at its best—a double-whammy for getting rid of belly bulge.</p>
<p><strong>Enjoy some yogurt</strong><br />
Probiotics, the healthful bacteria found in yogurt and other fermented foods, have been proven to help reduce belly fat. In a recent study in Finland, new mothers who took probiotic supplements averaged smaller waist circumferences, and lower body fat in general, than those who didn&#8217;t take probiotic supplements. And while the topic is still controversial, studies have found that eating lots of calcium-rich dairy foods like yogurt may increase overall weight loss.</p>
<p><strong>Don&#8217;t forget to eat</strong><br />
Tempted to lower your daily calorie count by skipping meals? Don&#8217;t. Going hungry can raise your levels of the stress-related hormone cortisol, which research has found can increase belly fat even in otherwise thin women. And eating too infrequently can lower your metabolism and energy levels, while increasing the chance that you&#8217;ll get too hungry and decide to chuck your meal plan entirely. If you&#8217;re eating the right foods, regular meals and snacks will keep your body fueled while you&#8217;re working toward that strong core.</p>
<p><strong>Drink more fluids</strong><br />
Hydration is important when you&#8217;re on a fitness plan, but drinking plenty of water has particular benefits for your midsection. It helps keep your stomach full, so you don&#8217;t overeat, and it helps flush out excess sodium to prevent belly bloating. (Eating more potassium-rich foods, such as tomatoes and bananas, will also help in this area.) Plain ol&#8217; H20 can&#8217;t be beat, but you can also switch it up with flavored waters, iced tea, and anything else you like to drink that isn&#8217;t full of sweeteners. How much do you need? The old rule of 8 glasses a day is a good start, but everyone is different: drink more if you&#8217;re exercising or it&#8217;s hot out, and drink less if you&#8217;re running to the bathroom every 5 minutes.</p>
<p><strong>. . . With two exceptions</strong><br />
It&#8217;s time to cut down on those mood-altering substances, coffee and alcohol. Too much caffeine raises your cortisol levels and can impair your sleep, which can lower the production of fitness-promoting hormones. Meanwhile, the proverbial &#8220;beer belly&#8221; isn&#8217;t just the result of extra calories—alcohol actually makes it more difficult for your body to metabolize carbs and fat. Booze also stimulates your appetite and lowers your inhibitions, which can lead to bingeing. The best road to flat abs is no alcohol at all, but if you really like a drink now and then, just have one at a time (and no more than a few a week), and stay away from higher-calorie beers and sugary mixed drinks.</p>
<p>If you add these rules to your fitness plan, you&#8217;re sure to see faster improvements in your midsection. Of course, there&#8217;s an added bonus to eating this way: it&#8217;ll keep you healthier, too. That may not be as big an inducement as great abs, but we&#8217;re throwing it in for free.</td>

<p>So here&#8217;s what you&#8217;ve got to do:</p>
<p>1.  READ THE BOOK! The nutrition guide that came in the box with your P90X program has tons of information. Everything you need to know about how to eat while doing P90X is in that book.<br />
2.  When you&#8217;re not sure of what to eat, ask yourself: how many ingredients does this food have? Does it have 67? Don&#8217;t eat it! Eat whole foods: anything that has one ingredient, like strawberries, broccoli, fish, etc. etc. etc. Eat cleanly and you&#8217;ll be successful.</p>

<strong>Answer:</strong> Not much!</p>
<p>How many people do you know that drink DIET soda because they think it will help them lose weight?  It&#8217;s the healthier choice&#8230;right?  While it IS free of calories, it IS NOT free of health side effects.  Some of the side effects of diet soda include:</p>
<ul>
<li>Kidney Damage</li>
<li>Weight Gain (yes, even though it&#8217;s &#8220;calorie free&#8221;&#8230;stay tuned and you&#8217;ll see why)</li>
<li>Tooth Enamel Damage</li>
<li>Bone Loss</li>
<li>Acid Reflux</li>
</ul>
<p>If you drink diet soda, you are drinking Phosphoric Acid.  It is an inorganic mineral acid with chemical formula H3PO4(&#8230;don&#8217;t worry, I won&#8217;t get too geeky or technical, I promise).  Although it is HORRIBLE for your body, it is a great &#8220;rust converter&#8221; by direct application and can be found at your local hardware store&#8230;or in a can of Diet Coke, whichever is more convenient.</p>
<p>I find that people generally have a very limited (or NO understanding of the body&#8217;s pH, the difference between alkaline forming foods vs. acidic forming foods, and how important it is to keep the body in proper pH balance. To be honest, until recently, neither did I!</p>

<p><strong>Alkalinazation for Good Health</strong>, by Darin Olien</p>
<p>Did You know human blood pH should be slightly alkaline ( 7.35 – 7.45 )? A pH of 7.0 is neutral, whereas a pH below 7.0 is acidic and a pH above 7.0 is alkaline.</p>
<p>An acidic pH, meaning low in oxygen, is caused by processes which deprive the cells of oxygen and other nutrients.  Improper diet, emotional stress, toxic overload, and/or immune reactions may be responsible for higher pH acidity.  The body will try to compensate for acidic pH by using alkaline minerals.  When not enough electrolyte minerals are found, cells become more acidic.  The effects of having an acidic pH can be extreme.  An acidic balance will decrease the body’s ability to absorb minerals and other nutrients, decrease the energy production in the cells, decrease it’s ability to repair damaged cells, decrease it’s ability to detoxify heavy metals, make tumor cells thrive, and make it more susceptible to fatigue and illness, creating an environment favorable to fermentation outside the digestive system, causing many extreme and unwanted processes in the body. This favors the overall production of nitric oxide, which is associated to cancer, inflammation and other pathological disturbances.</p>

<p>In American society, diet is typically the culprit for an acidic pH balance.  To maintain health, the diet should consist of 60% alkaline forming foods and 40% acid forming foods. To restore health, the diet should consist of 80% alkaline forming foods and 20% acid forming foods.  As a general rule, one can assume that most fresh fruits and vegetables are alkaline-producing, whereas meat, eggs, dairy, artificial sweeteners, and coffee are acid-producing.  It is important to note that the pH of the food and its effect on the body are not necessarily the same.  Some acidic foods, such as lemons, may be acidic before digestion, however they have an alkalinizing affect on the body. This is called pleomorphism. Similarly, meat is alkaline before digestion, but leaves acidic by-products in the body.  Although it might seem that citrus fruits would have an acidifying effect on the body, the citric acid in the whole food has an alkalizing effect on the system. For example; lemons are acidic in nature, but when ingested as a whole food, has a very alkalizing effect. This is not the case for isolated vitamin c or ascorbic acid as they are acidic outside as well as inside the body when isolated from the whole food as a supplement.</p>
<p>Adding more alkaline-producing components to a diet and eliminating acid-producing foods is a great idea for those individuals seeking to feel more energized or experience improvement in the strength of their immune system.  Having an understanding of alkalinity and acidity, as well as knowing which foods fall in either category, is one way to start feeling healthier today.  Below is a guideline to help inform your decision to consume or not consume various foods and substances:</p>
<p><strong>Extremely Alkaline </strong></p>
<p>Lemons, watermelon, baking soda, sea salt, mineral water, pumpkin seed, lentils, seaweed, onion, taro root, sea vegetables, lotus root, sweet potato, lime, lemons, nectarine, persimmon, raspberry, tangerine, and pineapple.</p>
<p><strong>Alkaline Forming </strong></p>
<p>Cantaloupe, cayenne, celery, dates, figs, kelp, limes, mango, melons, papaya, parsley, seaweeds, seedless grapes (sweet), watercress.</p>
<p>Asparagus, fruit juices, grapes (sweet), kiwifruit, passion fruit, pears (sweet), pineapple, raisins, umeboshi plums, and vegetable juices.</p>

<p>Apples (sweet), alfalfa sprouts, apricots, avocados, bananas (ripe), currants, dates, figs (fresh), garlic, grapefruit, grapes (less sweet), guavas, herbs (leafy green), lettuce (leafy green), nectarine, peaches (sweet), pears (less sweet), peas (fresh, sweet), pumpkin (sweet), sea salt (vegetable).</p>
<p>Apples (sour), beans (fresh, green), beets, bell peppers, broccoli, cabbage, carob, cauliflower, ginger (fresh), grapes (sour), lettuce (pale green), oranges, peaches (less sweet), peas (less sweet), potatoes (with skin), pumpkin (less sweet), raspberries, strawberries, squash, sweet Corn (fresh), turnip, vinegar (apple cider).</p>
<p>Apricots, spices, kambucha, unsulfured molasses, soy sauce, cashews, chestnuts, pepper, kohlrabi, parsnip, garlic, asparagus, kale, parsley, endive, arugula, mustard green, ginger root, broccoli, grapefruit, cantaloupe, honeydew, citrus, olive, dewberry, carrots, loganberry, and mango.</p>
<p><strong>Slightly Alkaline </strong></p>
<p>Almonds, artichokes (Jerusalem), brussel sprouts, cherries, coconut (fresh), cucumbers, eggplant, honey (raw), leeks, mushrooms, okra, olives (ripe), onions, pickles (homemade), radishes, sea salt, spices, tomatoes (sweet), vinegar (sweet brown rice).</p>
<p>Chestnuts (dry, roasted), egg yolks (soft cooked), essene bread, goat’s milk and whey (raw), mayonnaise (homemade), olive oil, sesame seeds (whole), soy beans (dry), soy cheese, soy milk, sprouted grains, tofu, tomatoes (less sweet), and yeast (nutritional flakes).</p>
<p>Most herbs, green tea, mu tea, rice syrup, apple cider vinegar, sake, quail eggs, primrose oil, sesame seed, cod liver oil, almonds, sprouts, potato, bell pepper, mushrooms, cauliflower, cabbage, rutabaga, ginseng, eggplant, pumpkin, collard green, pear, avocado, apples (sour), blackberry, cherry, peach, and papaya.<br />
<strong><br />
</strong><strong>Very Low Alkaline Forming Foods </strong></p>
<p>Ginger tea, umeboshi vinegar, ghee, duck eggs, oats, grain coffee, quinoa, japonica rice, wild rice, avocado oil, most seeds, coconut oil, olive oil, flax oil, brussel sprout, beet, chive, cilantro, celery, okra, cucumber, turnip greens, squashes, lettuces, orange, banana, blueberry, raisin, currant, grape, and strawberry.</p>
<p><strong>Neutral </strong></p>
<p>Butter (fresh, unsalted), cream (fresh, raw), cow’s milk and whey (raw), margarine, oils (except olive), and yogurt (plain).</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p><strong>Very Low Acid Forming Foods </strong></p>
<p>Curry, Kona coffee, honey, maple syrup, vinegar, cream, butter, goat/sheep cheese, chicken, gelatin, organs, venison, fish, wild duck, triticale, millet, kasha, amaranth, brown rice, pumpkin seed oil, grape seed oil, sunflower oil, pine nuts, canola oil, spinach, fava beans, black-eyed peas, string beans, wax beans, zucchini, chutney, rhubarb, coconut, guava, dry fruit, figs, and dates.</p>
<p><strong>Slightly Acidic</strong></p>
<p>Vanilla, alcohol, black tea, balsamic vinegar, cow milk, aged cheese, soy cheese, goat milk, game meat, lamb, mutton, boar, elk, shell fish, mollusks, goose, turkey, buckwheat, wheat, spelt, teff, kamut, farina, semolina, white rice, almond oil, sesame oil, safflower oil, tapioca, seitan, tofu, pinto beans, white beans, navy beans, red beans, adzuki beans, lima beans, chard, plum, prune and tomatoes.</p>
<p><strong>Moderately Acidic </strong></p>
<p>Bananas (green), barley (rye), blueberries, bran, butter, cereals (unrefined), cheeses, crackers (unrefined rye, rice and wheat), cranberries, dried beans (mung, adzuki, pinto, kidney, garbanzo), dry coconut, egg whites, eggs whole (cooked hard), fructose, goat’s milk (homogenized), honey (pasteurized), ketchup, maple syrup (unprocessed), milk (homogenized).</p>
<p>Molasses (unsulferd and organic), most nuts, mustard, oats (rye, organic), olives (pickled), pasta (whole grain), pastry (whole grain and honey), plums, popcorn (with salt and/or butter), potatoes, prunes, rice (basmati and brown), seeds (pumpkin, sunflower), soy sauce, and wheat bread (sprouted organic).</p>
<p>Nutmeg, coffee, casein, milk protein, cottage cheese, soy milk, pork, veal, bear, mussels, squid, chicken, maize, barley groats, corn, rye, oat bran, pistachio seeds, chestnut oil, lard, pecans, palm kernel oil, green peas, peanuts, snow peas, other legumes, garbanzo beans, cranberry, and pomegranate.</p>
<p><strong>Extremely Acidic </strong></p>
<p>Artificial sweeteners, beef, beer, breads, brown sugar, carbonated soft drinks, cereals (refined), chocolate, cigarettes and tobacco, coffee, cream of wheat (unrefined), custard (with white sugar), deer, drugs, fish, flour (white, wheat), fruit juices with sugar, jams, jellies, lamb.</p>
<p>Liquor, maple syrup (processed), molasses (sulphured), pasta (white), pastries and cakes from white flour, pickles (commercial), pork, poultry, seafood, sugar (white), table salt (refined and iodized), tea (black), white bread, white vinegar (processed), whole wheat foods, wine, and yogurt (sweetened).</p>
<p>Tabletop sweeteners like (NutraSweet, Spoonful, Sweet ‘N Low, Equal or Aspartame), pudding, jam, jelly, table salt (NaCl), beer, yeast, hops, malt, sugar, cocoa, white (acetic acid) vinegar, processed cheese, ice cream, beef, lobster, pheasant, barley, cottonseed oil, hazelnuts, walnuts, brazil nuts, fried foods, soybean, and soft drinks, especially the cola type. To neutralize a glass of cola with a pH of 2.5, it would take 32 glasses of alkaline water with a pH of 10.</p>
<p>*Remember that factors other than foods contribute to alkalinity and acidosis.  Drugs and chemicals you may be knowingly or unknowingly exposed to can also influence your pH balance:</p>

**Our minds and emotions also affect our pH balance.  Practices like meditation and prayer are considered alkaline, as are practices of peace, kindness and love.  Alternately, anger, fear, jealousy, stress, and being overworked have an acidifying effect on the body.</p>
<p>Keep this list in mind when making choices in the future.  A healthy pH is vital to healthy life!</p>

<p>When I decided to commit 100% to <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcLNAMpULLY" target="_blank">my transformation</a> I had to make significant changes to my diet and exercise.   Normal people didn’t understand these changes.  For example, when I went out to lunch with friends I’d order a salad with no cheese, no croutons, and no dressing…weird huh!  Baskets of hot delicious white bread would be placed in front of us and I wouldn’t touch it.  It was a bit of an adjustment for me, but I was focused like a laser on my goals.  I knew what it would take to achieve them and knew I had to be weird.  After all, normal people  aren’t ripped with 7% body fat!</p>
<p>If you are committed to <a href="http://getrippednation.com/choose-your-weapons/fitness-programs/p90x/" target="_blank">P90X</a>, <a href="http://getrippednation.com/choose-your-weapons/fitness-programs/insanity/" target="_blank">Insanity</a>, <a href="http://getrippednation.com/choose-your-weapons/fitness-programs/insanity-the-asylum/" target="_blank">The ASYLUM</a>, Turbo Fire, Chalean Extreme, etc. you must have the courage to step out the “normal” and move into the realm of the “weird”.  People will probably label you as extreme, obsessed, fitness fanatic, no fun.  You will hear things like “would you like some tree bark for lunch?”, or some other lame attempt at humor.  But you know what?  I embrace that!  Because that means I am not doing what normal people are doing.  I’m not going to end up on blood pressure meds, or cholesterol meds, or have obesity related diseases.  I’m going to be the weirdo that has the strength, flexibility, and energy to play ball with my child and grandchildren, and maybe even my great grandchildren.  That’s not normal…that is weird!  And I’m teaching my son to be weird too!</p>
<p>Do you have the courage to be weird?  You won’t regret it if you do!  The rewards of a &#8220;weird&#8221; life are wonderful!</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<!-- Start Shareaholic LikeButtonSetTop Automatic --><div style="clear: both; min-height: 1px; height: 3px; width: 100%;"></div><div class='shareaholic-like-buttonset' style='float:none;height:30px;'><a class='shareaholic-fblike' data-shr_layout='button_count' data-shr_showfaces='false' data-shr_href='http%3A%2F%2Fgetrippednation.com%2Fb-nutrition%2Fpost-workout-recovery%2F' data-shr_title='Post-Workout+Recovery'></a></div><div style="clear: both; min-height: 1px; height: 3px; width: 100%;"></div><!-- End Shareaholic LikeButtonSetTop Automatic --><p><img class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-2657" title="Post Workout Recovery" src="http://getrippednation.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Post-Workout-Recovery-300x200.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="200" />So, you started <a href="http://getrippednation.com/choose-your-weapons/fitness-programs/p90x/" target="_blank">P90X</a>, <a href="http://getrippednation.com/choose-your-weapons/fitness-programs/insanity/" target="_blank">INSANITY</a>, or one of the other crazy <a href="http://getrippednation.com/choose-your-weapons/fitness-programs/all-programs/" target="_blank">Beachbody fitness programs</a>.  You push hard!  Give it your all!  You sweat!  You moan and groan!  You collapse in near exhaustion (that’s my favorite part, Lol!)!  Then it’s over!  Now what?  You need to recover from it…and you need a plan!</p>
<p>Recovery is one of the most important aspects of an exercise program.  It doesn’t matter how hard you push yourself during a workout, you won’t see great results if you don’t give your body what it needs to recover properly when the hard work is over. After all, you only workout for about 1 hour per day, so what you do with your body for the remaining 23 hours is crucial to getting great results.  Your body’s ability to recover quickly, so you can get the most out of your workout can be greatly enhanced by following a few simple steps.</p>
<p>First, let’s review some very basic fundamentals of nutrition and what your body needs.  I know it is much more complicated that this, but for simplicity just bear with me.</p>
<ol>
<li>Proteins and Fats are used to make up body tissue</li>
<li>Carbohydrates are broken down by the body into sugars and are used to fuel your body.</li>
</ol>
<p>Carb aren’t stored in your body.  We need to burn them off in the form of energy, and the amount that we consume should be directly proportional to the amount of exercise we are doing to burn them off.</p>
<p>Your body stores enough blood sugar and carbohydrates (glycogen) to fuel your body adequately though about 1 hr of intense exercise.  Unless you are continually replenishing your body with glycogen DURING the workout, you will most likely start to crash (bonk) at the end of about 1 hr of hard exercise.  Sooner if your body isn’t properly nourished with carbs.  At the end of the workout your glycogen stores are depleted and need to be restored.  The quicker they are restored, the quicker you will recover.<a href="http://getrippednation.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Recovery.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-2646" title="Recovery" src="http://getrippednation.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/Recovery.jpg" alt="" width="260" height="292" /></a></p>
<p>Everyone probably knows that when you workout strenuously we are essentially breaking down muscle tissue, and we need to repair that tissue to become stronger and grow our muscles.  The main building block of muscle is protein.  So you would think that giving your body a lot of protein immediately after your workout is the way to go…but it’s not quite that simple.</p>
<p>Protein is absorbed slowly into your body, while carbohydrates are absorbed and utilized much more quickly.  We want our body to recovery quickly, so we need to give it nutrients that it can use quickly.  A small amount of sugar immediately after a workout is just what the body is begging for.  Typically, we don’t need any sugar in our diet.  It is best to get energy from complex carbohydrates and fiber and force our bodies to break them down into sugar naturally.  But a small amount of sugar post-workout will replenish your blood sugar and jump-start an efficient recovery process.</p>
<p>Studies have shown that sugar with a small amount of protein in a 4:1 ratio is the optimal formula.  This combination has been shown to improve recovery by 25% over sugar alone, and 400% better than protein alone.  The window of opportunity is within 1 hour after your workout.  I practically sprint to the kitchen to mix my recovery formula after my workout!  Our goal is to aid rapid digestion of these nutrients, so avoid fat and fiber until your body has had a chance to digest the recovery formula.  I usually wait about 45 minutes to an hour and then follow up with Shakeology and 1 scoop of additional protein powder.</p>

<p><img class="alignleft size-full wp-image-1386" title="Click here for more information on P90X Results &amp; Recovery" src="http://getrippednation.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/RRTub_thumb1.png" alt="" width="170" height="100" />There are many post workout formulas out on the market, and I’ve tried a handful of them.  I have been using the <a href="http://teambeachbody.com/shop/-/shopping/P90XRRFTub?referringRepId=76811" target="_blank">P90X Results and Recovery Formula</a> consistently since I started P90X and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OcLNAMpULLY" target="_blank">I got great results</a>!  I take it after every workout, if I deserve it.  By that I mean, it has to be an intense workout session that depletes my glycogen stores.  I don’t use it after Yoga or X-Stretch for example, although it’s tempting because it tastes amazing!  I am a firm believer in the Result and Recovery formula after seeing and feeling the results for the last 7 months.  My post-workout fatigue is gone almost instantly and the muscle soreness is greatly reduced.  My muscles are given the best chance for a quick recovery so they’ll be ready for the next time I BRING IT!</p>
